To Be Trendy or Not Trendy

Longevity and flexibility are key to designing any new or renovated living space. Yet often we gravitate to the latest design trends because, well, everyone else is. But, then we find ourselves wanting to renovate over and over again. Slavishly pursuing today’s rage risks tomorrow’s regret.

So, what is the solution? The best home design takes into account not only what is in vogue, but also what stands the test of time. Our approach is to integrate elements from all points on the compass. We design for longevity and flexibility, while always personalizing the living spaces of our clients.

CLASSIC

We suggest several classic elements that have been in style over the long-term. They are inherently timeless and rhythmic, yet not always traditional. Examples include polished nickel and satin brass, neutral color palettes, warm tone materials, and hand-crafted casework. All will continue to be the centerpieces of classic home design that lasts through many décor trends.

TRENDY

Trends make statements. They’re fun! The key to any trend, however, is to use it in a way that is easy to adjust when it is no longer trendy. Consider the classic all-white kitchen; it’s been a favorite for a while now. Adding color to the space revives it. Color pops and reflects the client’s sense of style. We suggest using paint, smaller design elements and accessories to showcase a trend without disrupting the living space design. There is no need to replace your kitchen because a trend passes!

While most trends last a year or two, there are those that good designers will recognize as timeless. Consider deep blues, navy, shades of gray and satin brass; all began as trends that evolved over time. Today they are mainstays – classic colors that create the room-to-room rhythm fundamental in classic home design theory.

BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER

One project comes to mind that illustrates our philosophy of longevity and flexibility. The client, whose home design was classic, asked us to incorporate the color turquoise throughout her home. Turquoise was the color of a rare necklace she treasured. Rather than using turquoise (her personal “trend”) in permanent components of the living spaces, we suggested using the color through furniture fabrics, accent tile, artwork and area rugs - all easily replaceable. The strategic infusion of turquoise in each room led to the overall cohesion of the living spaces. Eventually the home was sold. We worked with the new owner to replace and remove the turquoise elements, but the home’s classic design components continued to stand the test of time.
