BATHROOM RENOVATION - MODERN SERENITY
Combining function and design harmony to modernize an outdated bathroom.
This client desired a larger shower space and to add more efficient storage wherever they could.
The following design journal post features a full set of images, along with a more detail and insight in to how we provided the solutions to their bathroom needs.
This primary bathroom suite was frozen in the early 1990s, consisting of an out-of-proportion stepped tub platform, oversized bulkheads, a small enclosed shower stall and large wall-to-wall angled mirrors. The clients were looking to update the design with something more clean-lined and timeless while also bringing in warmer color tones.
In order to increase the shower footprint and bring it further out into the room, a curbless shower was created with a three-sided glass enclosure to provide a more spacious feeling.
The shower bench and half wall footprint was mirrored on the opposite side of the wall by adding a pull-out storage cabinet, which created a niche for a freestanding tub. Quartz countertop material was used for durability at this area, since it also tied in as the window sill behind the tub.
The floor platform below the vanity was repeated on the opposite side of the room below the freestanding tub. Since the platform would be in direct contact with water, we sourced a porcelain tile that blended with the color tones and graining of the rift oak veneer at the vanity.
In the vanity area, a large portion of the bathroom was taken up by a bump out for the foyer closet in the adjacent space.
We wanted to expand the length of the vanity wall but also felt it was important for the new design to keep it symmetrically balanced on the center axis of the room. The foyer closet was reduced in width but still left a small obstruction on one side of the room. This smaller bump-out was concealed with false cabinetry panels that were mimicked on the opposite side of the vanity wall with a tall linen closet for maximized storage. Rift white oak floating vanity cabinets and floor platform in a warm stain paired with linear marble tile w/ gold accents, decorative mirrors and sconces balance out the main focal point wall.
Custom recessed medicine cabinets were framed into the tiled wall behind the decorative mirrors for additional hidden storage.
The updated design of the bathroom provided the clients with a comfortable and well-balanced space while also giving them the function and storage that was needed.
